Cute and funny point and click adventure

Nelly Cootalot is a independent point and click adventure, in which you play Nelly Cootalot, a pirate, who has to find out why the Spoonbeak birds have disappeared from the Isle of Meethe.

During the game, as creator Alasdair Beckett says, you'll rescue endangered and unusually named wildfowl, acquire morally dubious items on behalf of minor aristocrats, come to the aid of downtrodden supernatural beings, and borrow facial hair from long dead pirates.

Nelly Cootalot's art style is pretty, unusual and adds a sense of style to the witty humor of the dialogue. The game is controlled with the mouse (plus some keyboard shortcuts), and features a simple and quite intuitive control system with an 'Action Compass' to interact with objects and people. There are no instructions in the game, but they can be found online (see our Extras section).

The biggest draw of Nelly Cootalot is the dialogue. It's very well written, full of gentle humor that will pull you along the adventure, and the puzzles are also mostly excellent.

The only bad thing about Nelly Cootalot is the speed. Once you begin to speak with someone, you cannot click through conversations at your own pace, which forces you to take things slowly. If you are an impatient gamer, this might irritate you. The music is pretty forgettable, but never gets annoying.

Adventures such as this, with its slow pace and basic, though charming, graphics are not the norm these days, and this is well worth checking out.
